Lover Whippoorwill And The Pine

Late at night, under the moon's light
  Searching the stars above
Lookin' for those sad blue eyes
The eyes of the one he loves
But every night, he gets no answer
she seems not to hear his call
But stop on by my heavy-hearted friend
For they say he cries for us all

He cried, Baby why did you leave me
  Darlin', why did you go
And sweetheart come back to see me
I'm waitin' for your knock on my door

Twelve New Year Eve's, the trees received
The cries from his mountain home
Many's the night, the town folk below
Heard his wails, his cries, his moans
And how they prayed he be called away
To his bride these twelve years gone
For how could one torn suffering heart
  Sing sadness for so long

He cried, Baby why did you leave me
  Darlin', why did you go
And sweetheart come back to see me
I'm waitin' for your knock on my door

The wind was still, a whippoorwill
Blew twelve low tones and then
The tallest pine sang the final chime
"Thou shalt see thy bride again"
The town folk say that to this day
  The whippoorwill and the pine
Sing silent prayer to those suffering there
  "Let thy sadness be mine"
